John Wooden quotes

A lot of people these days are not music lovers – they just want to be famous which is a very different thing to what I grew up believing in.

AC/DC, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper – I learned stories of all these guys. That’s when I fell in love with Queen, which is one of my favorite bands of all time… I started paying attention to what made music good. I started paying attention to why I liked it.

Everything I thought I’d hate about having children – the crying, the screaming – nothing fazes me. I love it all, and it’s relaxed me.

God is so big. It’s a gigantic concept in God. The idea that God might love us and be interested in us is kind of huge and gigantic, but we turn it, because we’re small-minded, into this tiny, petty, often greedy version of God, that is religion.

I like stories of the classic hero, of good versus evil, the ones in which the good guys wear white and the bad guys wear black… and I love a good sword fight.

I love hats; I love putting hats on. They are artwork. You can always go out and find a dress to wear for some occasion, but there are not that many occasions you can wear a hat.

I love the challenge of playing characters forced on life-changing emotional journeys. To work on a project with Billy Crudup and Sam Rockwell is just a dream come true.

I still cook at home. A lot of chefs I think don’t cook at home. But I still do, I love cooking at home, I love having friends.

I was a total athlete. I loved sports, but when I realized I wasn’t going to be a professional athlete, I realized I wanted to be in movies.

My uncle gave me a trumpet, but I loved the Louis Armstrong sound and the Harry James sound and I played by ear and I played always soulful or very direct from the gut.

Sometimes just being on a beach with my loved ones is all the adventure I need. I am a happy camper and continue to be a citizen of the world. I have yet to discover other cultures, other peoples’ dreams and treasures. I will always be a traveler who is discovering beautiful Gaia.

Sometimes when I get home after a long day, I’ll turn on music – I love Latin, disco, and pop – and do my own workout, even if it’s a short one. Know a good song to work out to? ‘I Will Survive.’

Songs are great. I love songs. I sing them in the shower sometimes. They can be poignant or cheery or angry, and they can have catchy and satisfying melodies. There’s nothing wrong with songs.

The cat does not offer services. The cat offers itself. Of course he wants care and shelter. You don’t buy love for nothing.

The way I would choose to identify myself wouldn’t be gay. I’ve been attracted mostly to ‘she’s’ but I’ve been with many people and I’m open to love wherever it can be found.

There’s a book that I read, really a great book – it’s called ‘Lone Survivor’ and I think they’re trying to make it into a movie. I would love to play Marcus Luttrell, who was the author and the ‘lone survivor.’ He’s a national hero; he’s very courageous and heroic in insurmountable danger, so it’s something I’d love to explore.

We all feel love, and that might sound kind of corny, but I really feel that’s what joins musicians together around the world.

We have this really retro vibe and style of songwriting and, personally, I wasn’t embracing the current state of music until I fell in love with hip-hop. It felt good to suddenly embrace where music was headed, and I think hip-hop is the best at that, because it feels so progressive and everybody wants to be the best.

When I’m writing the first draft, I’m writing in a very slovenly way: anything to get the outline of the story on paper.

Wine lovers have known for centuries that decanting wine before serving it often improves its flavor. Whatever the dominant process, the traditional decanter is a rather pathetic tool to accomplish it. A few years ago, I found I could get much better results by using an ordinary kitchen blender.
